Wilmington School Committee endorses Hall of Fame naming for Jack Cushing 6-1

WILMINGTON — April 9, 2026 — Wilmington School Committee backs Hall of Fame dedication to Jack Cushing and rejects a Juneteenth makeup-day motion. The committee voted 6-1 at its April 9 meeting to recommend a town meeting warrant article dedicating the Wilmington High School athletic Hall of Fame to Cushing, with member Becky Lord the lone dissenter, saying she broadly prefers names that carry meaning for the whole community over individual honorifics. Member Nicholas Golden, who made the motion, called both recent warrant articles "pretty convincing cases" of community merit. Separately, a motion by Chair David Izzo to designate June 18, 2027, as a school day in case snow-day makeup days required it failed 2-5, with member Dr. McCauley urging the committee to instead schedule the school year to end before the holiday becomes an issue; town counsel had advised that a Saturday Juneteenth does not legally require a Friday observance, but flagged that collective bargaining agreements may require a contract-by-contract audit. The Cushing endorsement now goes to Wilmington Town Meeting on May 2.
